This week Governor Christie of New Jersey said that he thought gay marriage should be put up to a vote. Mayor Booker of Newark responded to a question from a reporter on the subject and his response is on You Tube and embedded below.
I can't agree with Mayor Booker's sentiments more. Rights for the minority should never be up to a popular vote of the majority. There are many things in which a vote is perfectly legitimate and welcome and Mayor Booker gives some fine examples that I would support. Civil rights are fundamental and should never be subject to a vote of the majority. Would the Civil Rights Act of 1964 be the law of the land if white Southerners could have voted against it? Absolutely not.
